Weekend Double Up

The weekend starts tonight at Zubar with our monthy The Party. We will be joined by our homies Broken Teeth, who have assembled an all star line up in the back room. We got Select and myself in the front and Keith P, Prince William and Schwa in the back. It's going to be bonkers!

Tomorrow night we will be in Houston. The Party has been gaining major momentum over the last year. Last month was our 1 year anniversary and we had 900 heads through the door! Let's do this again. Rehash is the production/DJ duo consisting of High-C and Wilson from Dallas, Texas. They're the two like-minded vinyl nerds who brought you the critically acclaimed "Last Part" b/w "Mind Under Matter" 45 in January of 2001. This effort constituted the first release on their privately owned and operated label RM-Sound which has since seen 3 more 7"s, two 12" EPs, as well as a 70 minute mix CD. TAXI FARE Vol. 3 Best of Dancehall 2008 is uploaded and ready for download. 2008 was such a big year for Dancehall music. So many huge tunes, huge moments. From Usain Bolt's 9.68 seconds to Mavado and Cocoa Tea's hair raising Barack Obama anthems... Jamaica was on fire last year!!

I really tried to bring the excitement of this past year's music and events to the mix, covering all the the big tunes like Sweep, Nuh Linga, So Special, No Games, 100 Stab... Tunes that at their own particular point in time were literally the hottest joints in the dance. I definitely want to say thank you to everyone that came out and supported Taxi Fare over the last year and a half. Charles Harper (1922-2007)

A Solo exhibition of original paintings and prints by Charles Harper opens at The Public Trust, Saturday March 7, 2009 (6-9PM). The exhibition runs through April 31, 2009.

Charles Harper (1922-2007)
Born in West Virginia in 1922, Harper's formative years were spent on his family farm. This upbringing shaped and inspired the direction of his visual language which began to take shape at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. It was there he met his wife and fellow artist Edie Harper. He would later go on to teach at the Art Academy while they raised their son Brett.

To this day, the images of Charles Harper are tightly woven into the fabric of our visual landscape. Harper's unique visual language rose to prominence with his contributions to Ford Times, as well as his work produced for the Audubon Society and the National Park Service. However, he is most renowned for his illustrations in The Golden Book of Biology. It is in this publication that one can see his effortless command of illustration and design.

His geometric style, which is synonymous with mid-century Modernism yielded some of the most compelling and timeless images of nature and wildlife. In a career that spanned 60 years, these depictions of nature have influenced generations of contemporary artists and designers, including Ryan McGinness whose work was exhibited alongside Harper's in the exhibition series, Graphic Content, at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In late 2007 a 400 page monograph titled, Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life, was authored by internationally acclaimed designer Todd Oldham and published by Ammo Books.

In an interview with Todd Oldham, Harper discussed his simplified forms:

"I don't think there was much resistance to the way I simplified things. I think everybody understood that. Some people liked it and others didn't care for it. There's some who want to count all the feathers in the wings and then others who never think about counting the feathers, like me."

This exhibition will consist of vintage serigraphs and original paintings. The Public Trust is honored to present the work of Charles Harper.

Grapes Run This

Looking Back

Our friends over at The Public Trust have a new show going up tomorrow. Looking Back: An exhibition of new work by jeremy Smith. If you are out and about, swing through and check it. The reception will take place from 6-9pm.

About the Artist
B. Islip, New York. Smith has quietly been on the rise as a self-made cartoonist after contributing his Ropeburn strip to Art Prostitute Issue 05, which he continued to do until the publications hiatus in 2007. That year he received a grant from the Xeric Foundation which he produced his first printed collection of Ropeburn comics. The work is the culmination of years of keen observation within the service industry and everyday life.

The recurring cast of characters illuminate the meaning found in daily interactions, through humor and with a sardonic wit. In addition to his contribution to Art Prostitute, Smith has also contributed work to the Portland Mercury and is currently pursuing a career as a nationally syndicated cartoonist. Jeremy Smith lives and works in Denton, Texas.

About the Exhibition
Looking Back will feature a new body of Smith's small scale drawings and original strips, as well as those from the first Ropeburn publication and Art Prostitute.

Tonight we have a couple of things going on. First off, I will be playing some records at this years Art Conspiracy. I was lucky enough to play at last year's event and it was a blast! Swing through and check out the local talent.

Art Conspiracy strives to put on guerilla-style, affordable art fundraisers and use the proceeds from these events to reinvest in the local arts economy. By doing this, Art Conspiracy works to unite the Dallas Fort Worth arts and music communities and raise awareness of the local arts scene.

Since 2005, Art Conspiracy has raised more than $34,000 for charities including St. Anthony’s Community Center, La Reunion, and The Children’s Health Fun. Art Conspiracy is in the process of getting its official 501(c)3 nonprofit status.

Brent Ozaeta Reception :: This Friday

About the Artist
b. 1985, Dallas, Texas. Ozaeta graduated in 2007 with a BA from the University of Texas at Dallas. That same year he received an award from the Dallas Museum of Art's Degoyler Fund, which recognizes the talent and potential of young visual artists. Ozaeta will also be featured in the upcoming edition of New American Paintings. Brent Ozaeta lives and works in Dallas, and is represented by The Public Trust.

About the Exhibition
Ozaeta's work focuses on the consumption of information and the insertion of ideas through visual relationships. The work maintains a juxtaposition of seemingly arbitrary imagery caused by the everyday bombardment of visual media via the Internet. The images presented include subjects like Japanese pop culture icons, variety T.V. shows, videogames, and comic books.

These images are produced as silkscreen prints then transferred onto canvas. The collages, which are stitched together from a library of images, are composed beforehand on drafting vellum. There is often an additional layer added to the pieces utilizing different media such as pencil or gouache.

This solo exhibition will be the artist's first with The Public Trust. Opening Reception: Fri. 10.24.08 (6-9PM)
Exhibition runs through November.

Michael Patrick was kind enough to take time out of his busy work (party) day and answer a few questions and drop some knowledge on us. Tell the people who you are and what you do.
My name is Michael Patrick and I get paid to party (as long as I play music while I party) and I produce music with Theodore Nelson (Greek Translation: Gift of the Gods) who is currently studying hard in college, hence why I do most of the parting(DJing) on my own.

How did Designer Drugs form? Are you both from Philly?
We both met in High School and grew up outside of Philly where we went clubbing as teenagers.

Do both of you produce and DJ, or do each of you have your own area of expertise?
We both write the tracks. Sometimes it's one or the other writing and sometimes we work together. It's pretty much a 50/50 split. I write all the good tracks though. Theo's write the tracks with the banjos and kazoo solos.

I have been seeing quite a few (quality) remixes pop up on the blog circuit over the last month. Are you currently working on a remix album? What projects do you have in the works right now?
Oh geez, Umm, We are trying to work on more original material but the demand for remixes are high at the moment and since we are slaves to the economy we have no choice but to make billions of dollars doing remixes. We are releasing our first single on Iheartcomix, October 28th and we're pretty confident it's going platinum or double platinum on the first day. We are really hoping it will bring the stock market back up a couple hundred points. They haven't mentioned it in the WSJ yet but they did mention us in New York Magazine Plus we have a ton of other remixes and apparel going on that you can peep on our Myspace.

I heard that you are fond of Texas. Tell us a bit about that one.
Oh man, too fond. I love rodeo, cacti, tacos, caliente chiquitas, tacos and caliente chiquitas.

The Collective one year Birthday bash on friday was a blast! Andy was back in full effect. If you don't know Andy, I'm sure you encountered him at some point during the evening. Collective came through with their posse and gave away a lot of gear through out the night. Thanks again to Chris, Andy, Mark and the whole crew for hooking up the sponsorships and making it an extra special Party.

Houston. Insanity! 617 people through the door!! Everyone was tired of sitting around the house and I think they all picked Saturday to let loose and get out. The Collective Story

I'm sure you have noticed the Collective logo at the bottom of some of our event flyers. Collective is a skateboard shop run by our good friends, Chris Goulet and Andy Ohlin. Tomorrow we will be celebrating their one year anniversary in conjunction with The Party at Zubar. Collective has hooked up giveaways from Chocolate, 4star, Vans and there will be Red Stripe specials all night. Get there early and avoid the line...it's going to be packed for sure! Below are a few questions that Andy and Chris took the time to answer. Get familiar. Oh yeah, go check out the shop!

How and when did you guys meet?
A He needed a ride home and when he got in the car I was playing Mobb Deep "Hell on Earth" and he asked me if I had heard the new Mobb Deep CD. I really thought he was retarded for two years after that. He also was wearing Wu-Tang Jeans if that tells you anything.

C I met Andy at The Foundation or Slab depending on where your from it was on 121 & Harwood in Bedford. He inward heeled up this gap there in his Etnies Raps and then sold me a 101 board.

I remember seeing both of you hazing little kids at Freestyle back in the day. How long have you been skating and or making fun of the less fortunate?
A I will have been skating for 20 years in November. I got a Vision Gator a week before I turned 11. I think It started the day we met. He pushed mongo and you know that shit can't go unpunished. He has followed my lead ever since.

C I started skating in '94 and I have always been a sarcastic little prick. I was at Freestyle multiple times a week for years, (during the golden era of freestyle). I think I made fun of everyone who went there at least once. I have so many good stories from there.

Obviously the shop has been around for 1 year. How long was the idea for the shop brewing? What was your goal with the shop?
A I had 3 goals:
1. Make it close to a bar.
2. Hire dirty skanks.
3. Have a safe place to do blow.

C I know Andy has always been running a shop (out of his trunk), but for me it really started brewing about 4 years ago, but I have to say, it was more of a frost brewing though.

The goals were get it open, keep it open and support skateboarding first and foremost.

How do you feel about the DFW skate scene? I see alot of younger kids hitting you guys up. Is skateboarding growing at a faster rate than ever before?
A DFW has always been the most hating scene ever and It always will be. This has been the case long before most people started skating. Look at all the shitbags from here, myself incuded. This place is awesome!

C We have a strong skate scene here, most of the kids have fun, film and have a good handle on what real skateboarding is. The ProActive side of skateboarding here is really blowing up.

I know you guys have a skate team...who are the local rippers putting it down?
A Fuck, I didn't even know we had a team. I am just in this for the money.

C In Dallas we have: Zack Ater, Mark Desouza, Michael Tang, Kennedy Cantrell, Kenny Hampton, Sean Reyna.

And Houston we got:
Robert Lim (NY via H-town), Guru Khalsa, Erik Ostos, Ivan Lavigne and Eric Croft

My home dudes over at KEY CITY have got some heat coming out of Dallas.....THIS IS SERIOUS! Not only did they make the shirt "THE SCENE IS STRONG", which is available right now at KEY CITY. They have also recently teamed up with Estate La for a Kixpo fitted hat. These dudes showed me, Big J, and Joe skillz a lot of love on there first shirt release "The Scence is strong", which features the 3 of us in different poses from some of our craziest moments. I know for a fact my picture was taken at our first party with Roxy almost 2 years ago @ zubar. I support these dudes 100%....they are repping their city, they got love for what they do and come on any shirt with me on it?!? YOU GOT TO GET THAT HAHA!

You know the Central Booking boys love them track bikes and our dude Sober holds down the art aspect of the posse, but all things aside, I got the place to be on Thursday in Austin. Cinelli and RVCA collaborated with some of the worlds finest contemporary artist for this special event. I had the very fortunate opportunity to play at Ray Noland's Got Next opening this past week. Chicken George and myself were the music for the night and the art was top notch. There were pieces from Noland, Shepard Fairey, and HVW8 to name a few. I did not get my hands on one of the screened posters for the events, but I did get some decent pictures of the night. Dj Excel :: Reckless From Philly 2 Texas

I first heard wind of Dj Excel several years back on my first trip to Philly. I was checking out local boutique store UBIQ when I came across some mix cds. The one that stood out (trackilist & cover) was Excel an Sat One's "95 Klassics" mix, one of the best early nineties mixes I had heard to date. Excel combined skills on the cuts and blends and the tracks he chose were top notch. Dallas get ready because Excel is rocking out with us at Hands Up this Saturday and it's going to be madness! I heard that he just MURDERED it at the RUB party this last week in Brooklyn. Come by and pre game it with us at the Centre BBQ and then head over to The Loft for the realness!

Tell us who you are, who you rep, what you do.
Who am I? I'm one of the few real turntablist DJ's still in the mix & on the grind. I'm Excel, representing Philly, representing good music, representing the Skratch Makaniks Crew.

Philly born and raised? When did you first get in to djing?
I am born and raised in Philly. I started djing at age 11. I was always into music. I started messing with records just off of g.p. I scrounged up turntables, a mixer and random records and taught myself from what I heard. Being from Philly that flavor and funkiness on the turntables came from legends like Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money, Tat Money, etc.

I know you have done a little battling and rep. Scratch Makaniks. How did you guys all meet up?
Most def when I was younger, battling, playing parties and making mixtapes was the blueprint. They are guys I grew up with... my influences, my peers, my friends. These guys are the Skratch Makaniks.

You mentioned doing the radio thing for a while. Did you have a mix show andhow long did you do that?
Yeah, I did radio for about 5 years or so. I did some guest spots on Power 99 and a few college stations in the area. Then I worked at 103.9 WPHI, which then became 100.3 the beat. I did a few mix shows on there. It was a urban station. I then went to work for Wired 96.5 WRDW. Jay Ski and myself did all the mixing. When he moved on, I took over all the mix shows and was on 3 times a day as well as 4 hours straight on the friday nights. I was playing everything from old school hip hop, to current top 40, to mash ups, to even reggaeton. I worked at the beat for 3 years or so and did the wired thing for almost 2 years. Radio was a great experience and I got to meet really good people. I've also done shows for Sirius and XM Radio. I may revisit it in the future but I had to leave because of all the traveling & other work that I do.

Haha! Good Lookin homie! Maaaannn, that's the Philly OG Blueprint with djing. Ask any REAL DJ from Philly. They'll tell you... That's the "Philly Sound". It's what makes us unique on the wheels. I think a lot of people lost touch with that in the past serato/computer DJ world. It became too easy for any person to call themselves a DJ. Some of the masses don't know the difference anymore between talent and trash. So of course, when I play I do my best to make everyone have a good time and to school them on what the music should sound like when it's sliced and diced properly.

Super shout out to Dallas and all of the south! I'm excited to be in the hood rockin with ya'll! I haven't been down there in a min. we're gonna make it disco crunk!!! These two guys are extremely talented dj's. Both are really knowledgeable when it comes to the history of dance music. Ohh Wee! Get your boogie shoes out for this week's edition of Top Notch Thursdays. My guest this week will be none other than Luke Sardello, a true staple in Dallas dance music. I first remember seeing this dudes name on early 90's warehouse party flyers around town. I remember bumping some of his classic House mix TAPES in my CRX. Those were the days! Luke has been kind enough to answer a few questions posted below...good stuff. He also sent me a super smooth Deep Disco mix for your listening pleasure. Be sure and swing through The Lounge this Thursday, it may be the only time you get to catch an all vinyl rare Disco, Boogie, House and Electro Rap set.

Tell the people who you are, where you are from and what it is that you do.
My name is Luke Sardello, born in Dallas, avid collector and connoisseur of vintage vinyl. Like Rerog I'm catching up on The Wire, but I'm on season 4 courtesy of those BKK street vendors. I'm also a sometimes Moby impersonator.

How long have you been djing/ collecting records? What sparked your interest in djing?
I started DJing in '88 when a friend in high school turned me on to Chicago house music. Which at the time sounded like nothing I had heard before. The raw home-produced tracks had a certain energy that I had never heard in music before. I started buying records at local record shops and even a couple of head shops that had records. I have been collecting ever since. I worked at Bill's in the late 80's and left to open a short-lived store in Uptown in the early 90's. From there, I ran a couple of house music labels called Doghouse and Icon. I am also about to kick up a disco reissue label this fall, focusing on small unknown releases that for whatever reason never got much distribution.

Musically, I started buying and playing house music in the late 80's. Just like anyone who really loves this, you end up researching and exploring the history of where we are. So with that, I started looking at disco records that have been sampled in house records and eventually that's what lead me into collecting and playing everything from disco to soul and funk to jazz to hip hop.

I have heard rumors abourt how crazy your collection is. Approx. how many records are in your collection?
I'm not even sure anymore. My guess would be somewhere around 30,000. It's enough to take up a couple of rooms and be furniture in others. I mainly collect 12" singles from just about every era and genre. I've got a pretty wide range of soul, funk, latin and jazz LP's as well.

Why do you prefer vinyl over cds or Serato, especially for playing out?
I'm certainly not opposed to Serato or CD's. I use CD's in certain situations. I've always preferred vinyl because I'm able to make a better connection to what I'm playing when I can see the cover and feel the vinyl. There's also the issue of sound quality. Which is more noticable mostly in home-produced music, because there are a lot of producers that don't have to go through a mastering process if they're not pressing to vinyl. So I've found a lot of stuff on digital download sites like Beatport to have a tinny unmastered sound. The other side of the coin is that I'm also too lazy to go back and record stuff I do have on vinyl to CD. Plus if most people are using Serato, there will be turntables anyways so I just assume bring vinyl.

I also collect (and sell) vinyl because it's still got a huge following, particularly overseas. There's a market out there for certain genres where the demand far outweighs supply. So if you are selling the right records, there's a lot of money to be made.

I remember seeing you play out at some warehouse parties in the mid nineties. I actually have some old tapes from parties I believe you had a hand in throwing. How did you get into throwing these events? Also, Dallas at that time seemed to be looked at as a really good place for parties, would you say we were ahead of most cities at the time?
We really didn't know what we doing other than trying to throw something we thought we'd have fun at. Derrick Carter was doing promotions at Cajual in the early 90's and me and Tim Shumaker were running a local underground record pool and would hit him up for free records, so we started throwing parties by bringing him in to play at places like the old smoke stacks. That is where the W hotel sits now. It used to be just a bunch of old unused warehouses, a large pair of smoke stacks with a large dock and the Levy Street warehouse.

Who were the main people/ crews making moves in Dallas back in those days?
In the late 80's, there wasn't anything close to what Starck Club was doing. Mike Dupriest was playing stuff no one else would touch and to a lot of people he introduced underground dance music to Dallas. I also must mentioned Derrick Wright, who worked at Bill's and turned a lot of people onto buying underground dance records and to that extent had a great influence on a lot of people early on.

It seems the focus in the early 90's shifted more to renegade parties over clubs and bars. We would work with the Hazy Daze kids on and off. They would throw the really large ranch parties out of town. The main people there were Sean Holland, Cle, and Mike Constantino, who also had a store in the mid 90's called IGS. A lot of those people moved away and for whatever reason (police crackdown or lack of interest) that type of party has kind of died away.

What are 5 records are you really feeling right now? New or old, 12" or LP
The biggest reason my record collection is out of control is that I'm influenced by so many types of music, so with that in mind, 5 things I'm feeling right now:

1. Gary Davis - The Professor Here - Chocolate Star - 1982
Originally released on an 8-song LP of which maybe only 500 were pressed, but has been recently reissued by Rong Music with new re-edits; really raw disco/sort-of-discorap jammy

2. J.K. & Co. - Suddenly One Summer - White Whale - 1969
Kind of a hard LP to track down, but it's on iTunes; listen to Fly and see if that couldn't have been Radiohead if they were around back in the late 60's.

3. Freestyle Fellowship - Cornbread (from the Inner City Griots LP) - 4th and Broadway - 1993
How'd I miss this? I must have been in some other world when this came out. Most of the album is good too.

4. The Spiders - People Deceive - RCA - Late 60's
Just found this on a trip to Mexico; late 60's psych that was a product of the small but influential hippie scene in Guadalajara.

5) Jerome Derradji - The American Boogie Down - BBE - 2008
As a DJ, I'm always looking for cool mixes. There are always certain mixes that have been highly influential to me, so it's natural to include a whole comp of mixed songs. This is a current favorite (which I didn't know was even out, so I thank you for pointing it out to me) mix of mostly rare and obscure early 80's soul and boogie from the Midwest.

Anyone you want to shout out, give credit to. Any knowledge you would like to drop?
